  • The insomniacs by Allison Winn Scotch

šŸŒ™šŸ“– THIS BOOK KEPT ME UP ALL NIGHT… and I regret NOTHING 😱✨

WOW. I am still reeling from the ending of The Insomniacs by Allison Winn Scotch šŸ¤ÆšŸ’

This story pulls you in FAST with some seriously rich character development. We follow four strangers who can’t sleep and meet in a Sudoku chat room (yes, you read that right šŸ§©šŸ’»), and somehow… it works SO well.

    ✨ Meet the crew:
⚾ Zeke Rodriguez — an All-Star pitcher for the New York Mets
šŸ‘©ā€āš•ļø Sybil — former med student turned stay-at-home mom in her 40s (she’s my fave)
šŸ¬ Julian — a candy shop owner and devoted father
ā˜• Betty — the overnight diner worker who sees it all

They form a late-night bond, calling themselves The Insomniacs 🌃 — but here’s the thing… everyone is hiding something šŸ‘€

And trust me, you do NOT want spoilers for this one 🤐

I was so hooked I literally blew off work just to finish it šŸ˜…šŸ“š It felt like the pages reached out and pulled me in — I couldn’t stop until I knew the truth.

    šŸ”„ What I loved:
✨ Unique pacing that doesn’t follow your typical mystery formula
✨ Twists, red herrings, and constant ā€œwait… WHAT?ā€ moments
✨ Themes of identity, secrecy, and even some cult-like undertones using Christian language ⛪
✨ A subtle, budding romance šŸ’• that adds just the right touch

Honestly, this book felt like a breath of fresh air in the mystery genre šŸŒ¬ļøšŸ“–

If you love stories where nothing is as it seems and the ending leaves you stunned… this one is for you šŸ’„

šŸ™ Huge thanks to NetGalley and Berkley for the ARC!

  • Tropesick by Lauren okie

I went into this expecting a trope-filled romance… and came out completely wrecked in the best way. Because yes, the romance is there (and it delivers), but this story is so much more about grief, addiction, and the messy, complicated process of growing up and moving forward.

Katie is ghostwriting for a famous romance author (think Nora Roberts vibes šŸ‘€) when she finds out her co-writer is none other than Tyler—her ex-boyfriend and her late brother’s best friend. The same Tyler who disappeared from her life eight years ago after her brother Mikey’s death. And now? They’re forced to work together in close quarters. Cue tension, unresolved feelings, and so much chemistry.

Let me just say: the marketing calls this a love letter to romance tropes, but that almost undersells it. The tropes don’t feel like boxes being checked—they feel natural, lived-in, and completely earned. The story itself flows effortlessly, and the emotional depth hits hard.

And Meredith??? ICON. Every single line of wisdom she gives is stunning—I highlighted almost all of them. Truly one of those side characters who quietly steals the whole book.

No spoilers, but there is a twist—and if anyone tells you they saw it coming… they’re lying. Immediate unfollow. šŸš«šŸ˜‚

Tyler’s final declaration of love?? I’m still not over it. Gentle, generous, and deeply romantic in a way that feels real. Raise your standards, everyone.

    Other things I loved:
    ✨ The picturesque setting
✨ Katie’s chaotic, whimsical fashion (think: a 5-year-old at Disneyland and I mean that lovingly)
✨ The chemistry—palpable, emotional, and earned
✨ A respectful, realistic portrayal of recovery and addiction

āš ļø CW: sibling death, parental neglect/abandonment, addiction

I preordered a copy the second I finished—and I cannot wait for more people to experience this one. It’s not just a steamy romance—it’s a deeply human story that stays with you.

A very, very enthusiastic five stars (while sobbing)

A short tale of two elder gays at the end of their life. Well, everybody’s life. The earth is just a few weeks away of being sucked into a black hole. Don and Rodney are in their seventies, having been together 40 years. They leave their home behind and take their rickety RV on a road trip to Washington DC. They meet various folks along the way who at different places in accepting the world’s fate. Some are in denial, others angry, others in a blissful acceptance.

Throughout the story we learn about LGBTQ history in the US. Don and Rodney have lived through the AIDS crisis, marriage equality, and the passing of so many to violent hate crimes. They are survivors helping those they meet along the way to find peace. The fantasy/sci fi elements are a necessary part of the plot, but the narrative doesn’t go deep into this.

At its core, this is a love story. I immediately pre-ordered, as I’m eager to highlight and annotate my favorite parts.

It’s well paced for audio and a great audiobook performance from narrator Kirt Graves.

Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan audio for this outstanding ALC. the best book about the end of the world that I have ever read.

  • hot girl murder club by Ashley winstead

    Screenshot

Feminist revenge fiction. This book is about two stories, one is a series of revenge killings of women who supported and abetted the most terrible men, and then men who got away with terrible crimes against women. The other is of the detective Grey, whose sister went missing as a bottle girl years ago. In our current storyline, Grey is investigating and all evidence points to Scout the pop star. But is she being framed?

This is a classic Ashley Winstead tale, tons of characters across multiple timelines, and enough plot elements to keep you guessing. Everyone who dies has a backstory. The murderer is not who you think. I love the way she does the plot elements, you can figure things out just a minute before the main characters do.

Without spoiling the specific story, you will love this book if you are angry and ready to see the billionaire pdfs get what is coming to them. The women in this novel are righteous and smart.

Needless to say this is the story I’ve been craving lately. Thank you to NetGalley and Minotaur Books for the ARC. Book to be published July 14, 2026

  • The romance revival by christina Lauren

This is a bit of a departure from Christina + Lauren’s other works, its genre-bending. I predict this is going to be either your favorite CL title or your least favorite.

    It’s my favorite!

The second chance romance in this novel is the best I’ve read, a couple with 10/10 chemistry, wonderful back story and I am rooting for Luca and Emery all the way.

Our minor characters- Annie and Crash- need a book of their own. I love it when the ā€œbest friendā€ characters are so well developed that you love them as characters instead of merely background noise.

I don’t think I’m going to write a summary for this review, which is off-brand for me- but I think it’s best to go into as blind as possible.

So it’s the top tier romcom we know and love, but this is also cozy mystery, speculative fiction. I would LOVE to see these authors explore this genre more.

This is a risk that pays off big time! Infinity stars!

  • deadly does it by abbi waxman

Abbi Waxman does it again! If you enjoy Catherine Mack or Benjamin Stevenson, and you like a bantery hilarious book that also just so happen to have a mystery involved, you need to read this series. While I think this edition would work as a stand alone, I highly recommend you add the first in the series, [book:One Death at a Time|216522751], which was one of my favorite mysteries last year.

Mason and Julia are back and this time helping Mason’s sponsor Alexa. Alexa’s past has come back to haunt her, and she is getting typewritten anonymous threatening letters and someone is going after her sponsees. Mason has agreed to help and has enlisted Julia’s help.

I really love the relationship between Gen Z Mason and her much older employer Julia, who was a golden age movie actor and unjustly accused and convicted of murdering her husband. She became a lawyer in prison so now she acts as the law in the duo and Mason acts as the amateur private investigator. The references to AA are perfect and exactly like they are in real life, some people who got sober during covid are zoom babies and now there are AA meetings literally every single hour of the day on zoom. It is one of the great things that came out of the pandemic.

I am 14 years sober in AA and the authenticity of Mason, Julia and Alexa’s program is a huge reason why I love this series so much. But someone outside of recovery will still love the dialogue, the fast pace, and the blend of plot twists with deeper observations of human nature. I have already pre-ordered and I will re-read as a treat for myself when it is published.

  • this story might save your life by tiffany crum

    Screenshot

This is a special book. Plenty of books try to be mystery/thriller plus romance but one of the two always shines. This is an equally five star thriller alongside a five star romance. And did I mention it’s a debut? I’m blown away. I requested this after seeing several rave reviews and it did not disappoint.

Benny and Joy are podcasters and best friends with incredible chemistry. They’ve never been romantically entangled but it’s because of insecurities. They obviously love each other. The mystery is that Joy and her husband Xander have gone missing and the world is looking for them.

Audiobook is amazing- both performances are stellar. There is a bonus podcast episode and duet narration. I already ordered a trophy copy, I really loved this book. Definitely a Q1 favorite.

Thanks to NetGalley and Macmillan audio for the arc. Book to be published March 9, 2026.

  • japanese gothic by kylie lee baker

    Screenshot

Unbelievably haunting and the creepiest, craziest horror I have read. My best advice to horror fans that are going to read this— clear your schedule. No calls, no chores, not even a conversation. Once you pick this up, settle in because you aren’t going to want to be disturbed until you are done with this highly engrossing book.

In 2026, Lee has fled to Japan after murdering his college roommate. He is in his father’s house and claims to be taking time off for stress. The house is hundreds of years old, and it is also the 8 year anniversary of his mother’s disappearance.

In 1877, Sen is the eldest daughter of a Samurai and training with her father to protect their family at all costs. But when she sees Lee in her house, she doesn’t understand why there is a foreign ghost.

With interwoven timelines and a connection across centuries, this is a story with two unreliable narrators, a breadth of history and a plot that builds like a sandstorm.

I can’t even express how engaging this story is. What a skilled writer and storyteller! I went in with high expectations having loved her previous novel and WOW I was not disappointed. My mind is just racing.

    a best horror of 2026

  • enormous wings by laurie frankel

A truly magnificent book about our agency, not just how much power we have over our own bodies when pregnant, but as people. It starts when 77 year old Pepper gets into a car accident, her daughter takes her driver’s license, and she moves her into the same assisted living facility that her ex-husband is in. But doesn’t that make sense? That Pepper’s kids would want her to be in the same place as their father? Still, this is where the theme begins that Pepper loses her ability to make decisions about her life. She didn’t expect to fall in love, and NO ONE expected her to become pregnant.

What a crazy premise? I thought this would be more speculative, and although the premise is a little “out there” it is told in a realistic way. There is a fictional plot reason why she is an outlier of pregnancy. But even with such a fantasy-driven premise, this book ends up really making the reader think. If you like well written found-family books that make you think, this is the perfect book for you.

I have loved all of Laurie Frankel’s novels, and this one absolutely met my SKY HIGH expectations. One of my pet peeves on GoodReads is when an early reader says “well I liked this book but I didn’t like it as much as the author’s previous work which is my favorite” – Early readers can fall into that trap of having high expectations that result in lesser than fair ratings. In this case I can confidently tell you that I absolutely LOVED this story, LOVED the characters, I laughed so hard at Pepper, her English teacher observations, and her general acceptance of her life.

I could not tell what was going to happen next, and it was also sad to see so many people exploiting the pregnant septugenarian for their own political gains, you just wanted to scream, she is a HUMAN BEING not your mascot! Wow. I was fiercely protective of her.

Laurie Frankel is just a genius, “Family Family” was very pro-adoption without being anti-choice, and this was so, so needed in women’s literary fiction. This book takes an equally divisive topic and makes it really about the story. If you are sensitive about reading books about narrators that may not make the same decisions you would, this book could trigger you. But either way, I think it would be an excellent book club book to encourage lively discussions.

One of my top books of 2026!!

Thanks to NetGalley and Henry Holt for the ARC. Book to be published May 4, 2026.

  • both can be true by jessica guerreri

    Screenshot

A sad and beautiful story about all the different ways that women disappear and how we show up for each other when the men in our lives fail us.

Told in alternating POV, this novel follows Mere, a mom to Lily, and her sister Frankie, mom to Chloe and who is sober. Together they are taking care of their ailing father and bearing the mental load of their families. Then another mom goes missing, and the story follows not only what happened to her but all the secrets and hopes the women carry.

I love Jessica Guerreri’s writing, it is a mixture of deliberate symbolism and intriguing plot. It is sneakily feminist while exploring themes of motherhood and presence. Even the minor characters stand out in this story, some of the most touching scenes belong to those on the periphery. One of the gifts that sobriety brings is the privilege of being fully present for the pain, the joy and the miracle of everyday life.

This year I celebrated 14 years of sobriety in AA, and I work an active program. The role that AA plays in this story is very respectful without being overly positive. I love how Frankie’s sobriety journey isn’t linear. It’s a tradition that goes throughout sponsorship lines, and different people have different ways of doing things, with a variety of ways to interpret the work and the overall program. I’ve sponsored many women over the years, and without spoiling the story, I can definitely attest that this can be a roller coaster. And yet, this is how we stay sober. We get to keep it by giving it away. AA isn’t the only way to get sober, but it’s the way that worked for me.

I think that women- like myself- will see themselves in these pages and will start to question of numbing the stress of motherhood is really worth it after all.

At times I found Frankie to be controlling and even cringy in her talking to her daughter Chloe about her relationship. I’m always pretty critical of ā€œpurity cultureā€ in books and while it made me uncomfortable, it made sense for the character arc and the experiences the reader later learns about Frankie.

At the end of the day we all want to be seen and loved for who we are.
